A Poster By an Unknown

Limerick City Gallery, Ireland/West Cork Arts Centre, Ireland, 2006
Intervention into permanent collection.

10 artists were invited to intervene in and respond to the LCG’s permanent collection. We responded to a poster collection that we found in the museum’s archives. We first wanted to rotate the collection into the front of house for viewers to appreciate. The collection was donated by Michael O’Connor in the late 90’s to early 00’s and consisted of hundreds of posters he had collected from around the world throughout his lifetime. As the donation was something of a mystery, we were able to uncover hidden aspects of the rich and layered collection and tried to get in touch with him. Upon failing to meet, we published an open letter in the form of a poster, hoping he would come to the gallery. We chose a selection of the posters to go on view and made a documentary film of the rest, which was subsequently purchased by the gallery. A portion of the work was then shown at the West Cork Arts Centre where we performed a printing workshop.
